Sports Dramas and Animes

For you athletic people or your friends who are, you guys don't have a reason to not watch dramas or animes because there are many about sports.
Here are some dramas and animes about sports that I have watched.
I personally find that animes do a way better job at keeping the focus on the sport than most dramas, so if you play a sport or like a sport, I recommend animes over dramas.

Kuroko no Basket

Kuroko no Basket is a popular anime about basketball. In this anime, the Generation of Miracles is comprised of five genius basketball players each with uniques strengths. Only a few people know that there was actually a 6th member, Kuroko. With extremely little presence, people don't even know he's on the court. His special ability is to use his lack of presence to pass and steal the ball. He joins the Seirin basketball team, a rising team that lacks popularity and victories. There, he meets a naturally talented basketball player, Kagami, who is a great jumper. He decides to become Kagami's "shadow" to become a great duo to prove to the Generation of Miracles that teamwork is better than individual greatness.

Hot Shot

Hot Shot is also a basketball drama. Yuan Daying loves basketball but he has never finished an entire game of basketball because his grandmother banned him from playing basketball. After her death, she reveals the truth about why she never let him play basketball. She tells him in a letter to play the best that he can in college. She gives him instructions to find the principal of a college which once had one of the best basketball teams but now does not even have enough members to form a team. The principal takes him in and lets him attend that college. Coincidentally, the principal's daughter and a talented NBA coach who returns to Taiwan after a scandal decides to make her father's college's basketball team the best in Taiwan. With only three members, they are forced to accept the passionate Daying who possesses no skills. When Dong Fang Xiang, a star basketball player, transfers to their school, they recruit him in order to finally have five members, the minimum number of members needed to compete. During their path to win the championships, they struggle to work together as a team.

This drama is filled with overly dramatic acting. However, if you can look past that, this drama stars many popular Taiwanese actors: Jerry Yan from Meteor Garden, or the Taiwanese Boys Over Flowers; Show Luo from Hi, My Sweetheart; Wu Zun from the awesome band Fahrenheit; and George Hu.

Prince of Tennis (Anime, Mainland Chinese drama, and Japanese Movie)

This is a series with 2 seasons. I enjoyed the drama the most. The drama did a pretty good job in trying to keep all of their moves the same. There is a lot of exaggeration for it to be like the anime, but I personally have learned to look past it. This drama is realistic because even the most talented players are flawed. I re-watched this drama over 5 times.

Long Ma who won first place four years in a row in the American Junior Championship for tennis becomes cocky about his skills due to his victories. Afraid of his growing cockiness and isolation from the world, his father forces him to return to China. His father, once a top 50 tennis player in the world, is now a stay at home dad. He wants his son to experience being in a team, so he forced his son to attend his old university. At first, he looks down upon the members of the teams; however, he soon learns that he still has a long way to go. Through each match, Long Ma grows along with his teammates.

Whirlwind Girl

Taekwondo teaches the characters and viewers about respecting fellow peers, opponents, and sportsmanship. This drama teaches us to believe in ourselves and never give up. Qi Bai Cao's taekwondo teacher, Xu Xiang Nan, won the World Taekwondo Competition but is found to have taken drugs before the competition, so he lost his right to be a teacher and to ever compete again. He is now the disgrace of Anyang, a city where Taekwondo is the heart of the city. Bai Cao continues to follow her teacher and doesn't believe that he took the drugs. Bai Cao practices every day and quickly captures the attention of the people from Song Ban, one of the best Taekwondo schools around. She meets three guys. Ruo Bai is the head disciple of Song Ban and is more talented as a coach than as a competitor. Ting Hao is a handsome, rich, genius taekwondo competitor. Chu Yuan is a gentle medical student that is even more of a genius at taekwondo than Ting Hao. What will happen when all three of them fall for her as she tries to be the best female taekwondo competitor ever?

The best part of this drama is the guys. There is actually one more extremely cute guy (kid cute) named Wu Lei who plays Yi Feng, a talented taekwondo competitor also in Song Ban. Ruo Bai is my favorite. He is willing to sacrifice everything for the girl he loves and doesn't expect anything in return. I am so proud of Yang Yang, who plays Ruo Bai. This is his breakthrough role and he truly deserves it. Also, a second season will be coming out in 2016.

Tumbling

Looking for a drama about a less mainstream sport packed with bromance? This might be for you. Wataru is a great fighter with a bad temper and scares everyone at school. He is ordered by the school to join a sport or a club to make up for his lack of credits. When he learns that the beautiful Mari joined the gymnastics club, he gathers his gang to join the male tumbling club. Wataru and his gang constantly argue with the captain, Yuuta who takes this sport very seriously. The club is mocked because it is seen as a girly sport. They barely get to use the gym and have no championships under their belts, however, they all try their best to excel in the sport and cooperate with each other. Despite their differences, Wataru tries to help Yuuta achieve his dream of "flying in the air with others."

It is a beautiful drama with many handsome young boys. At first, this drama was so awkward because all these manly wannabe gangsters had to wear leotards. After they broke the ice with each other and learned to accept their leotards, they show that it doesn't matter what others think and with determination, anything is possible.

My MVP Valentine

Duan Cheng Feng (Johnny Yen), a MVP who plays for a small but good high school basketball team, runs into the talented and cocky cello player, Angel (Lin Li Wen) who is on her way to an audition for Julliard. She is also the sister of his opponent, Iceman (David Chen). The motorcycle accident causes her legs to become paralyzed. He decides to take care of Angel due to his guilt. His girlfriend, Xiao Xi (Angela Chang), is heartbroken that he doesn't have time for her. She also learns that Iceman told Cheng Feng that to repay his sins, he has to take care of his sister and stop playing basketball. Angel falls for Cheng Feng so Iceman makes a deal with Xiao Xi; if she breaks up with Cheng Feng then he will allow Cheng Feng to continue playing basketball. Xiao Xi agrees. Prince, or Tai Zi, falls for Xiao Xi amidst all of this and transfers to her school and joins the basketball team that she is trying to revive.

This drama has some of the best OSTs. There is a variety of songs from old school Kpop to Jpop to songs from 5566, a Taiwanese band who also stars in this drama. I would actually watch it for the music even if you aren't interested in the plot. Who could resist BoA, Shinhwa, Fly to the Sky, DA PUMP, 5566 and more?

Comment:
I like the pace of this drama. The couples slowly realize their love for each other and their relationships are really beautiful and healthy. Yi Hong is truly one of the cutest female leads I have seen. Her smile will melt anyone's heart. I also love the camaraderie in this drama. All the characters learn to be supportive and to work together despite being on different teams. If you are looking for a nice sport and youth drama, this is for you!
