NCT Part 2 (Concept, Musicality, Dancing, Music Video)

Here comes part 2 of my NCT post. The first post was a guide I made of my favorite NCT members' fun facts. Here is the link to Part 1. Part 2 of my NCT post will be about their concept, musicality, choreography, and music videos.

Concept
The two main reasons people are turned away from listening and liking NCT is one, their "confusing" concept, and two, their experimental music. The two reasons why people dislike NCT are the two reasons why I love NCT.

Personally for me, I understand there may be some confusion for those new to NCT's concept, but trust me, it is actually very simple and if you tried, it only takes a couple minutes to understand.

NCT stands for Neo Culture Technology. At its core, the main concept of the group is that there are no limitations to the number of members in this group and the number of sub-units that are a part of this group. Another important part of their concept is the philosophy that the people “can sympathize with each other through dreams and become one with one another through music.” Through music and technology (incorporated through their music videos), NCT will go on to spread the Hallyu wave, or South Korean culture, to all parts of the world.

NCT is like a brand. Under this umbrella term, there are many sub-units. Currently, there is NCT U, NCT 127, NCT Dream, and WayV, and a project group named NCT 2018. If you are still confused, I have seen NCT be compared to Vogue. There is Vogue magazine, but there is also regional Vogue such as Vogue China (WayV) and there are sister publications such as Teen Vogue (NCT Dream). The concept of NCT is to have sub-units promote in all parts of the world simultaneously and sometimes unite to collaborate on songs or projects. If you are still confused about the concept, here is a very well-made but slightly outdated video explaining their concept.

Though over the years, many people have criticized the concept saying it is too confusing and its ever-expanding member lineup is too much to handle, I disagree. I think NCT's concept is very smart and if done well, would be a game changer in kpop. NCT almost has its own world or universe. Being a fan of NCT as a whole is a lot of fun. You constantly have music because one sub-unit is almost always promoting or is about to promote, you have a lot of content to watch whether that be vlogs or variety shows, you have many members to fall in love with and learn more about and there are always new members being added (I see this as a pro because who would say no to more talent) and most uniquely, you get to see lots of cute interactions between all the members. There are also a lot of theories about how all the units are interrelated which adds to the fun of it all.

This is how I see it. Initially, when you learn about NCT, you might think it is very complicated. However, it is actually very simple. The fixed sub-units at the moment include NCT 127, NCT Dream, and WayV. You can just think of them as their own group. After you listen to their music, learn more about the members, and maybe... hopefully... gradually fall in love with them, you will be hungry for more of their content. Then you realize that they are actually a part of a larger group called NCT. Now, not only do you have songs and performances by the sub-unit you like, you have songs from NCT U and NCT 2018 which may have a member that you like from the sub-unit. As you learn more about NCT, you may start to like the other sub-units. At this point, you will have naturally learned about all the different sub-units, the NCT concept, and all the members.

Some people are concerned that the constant addition of new members might lead to unfair line distribution or whatnot. As long as they are added due to the debut of a new sub-unit, this would not be a problem. Their addition will not affect the line distribution of other sub-units.

From a business standpoint, NCT's concept is very clever. It is way easier to debut a new sub-unit than to debut an entirely new group. In the past, some people complained that SM took too long to debut a new group. However, with NCT's concept, SM could essentially debut a new group in a fraction of the time and spending way less money. For people a fan of NCT as a whole, they will naturally pay attention to the new debut. If the sub-unit includes a member who took part in another sub-unit in the past, such as WinWin debuting in WayV, this group will naturally have fans even pre-debut. If they do not want to come up with an entirely new concept (ex. EXO's superpower concept) for the sub-unit, they don't have to. They could very well just be another regional sub-unit.

Also, regional sub-units are very smart and a dream come true for international fans. For example, I am a fluent Mandarin speaker. When WayV debuted, there was finally a group that I could understand without needing to wait for subtitles (at least for some of their songs... they sing too fast and their lyrics are too difficult to understand). There was finally a group I could "communicate" with on social media without needing translations. This group has the same good music, good choreography, and good music video that I love about Kpop but is in Mandarin, a language I can understand and speak/sing. Idk about you, but this is a dream come true for me. Now if only there was an NCT America or something.

Musicality
Once again, I am no professional singer, rapper, or dancer, so everything I say, I am saying this as a fan. I do not mean to evaluate them professionally. What I say is my personal opinion about them.

I really love all of NCT's music. I love all the different sub-units' songs, all the title tracks, all the b-sides, everything. Stanning NCT is amazing. As a group, NCT has done a variety of concepts. If you like the more hip hop concept, we have amazing raps from Taeyong and Mark and we have a more hip hop concept like Limitless (Idk if the music is hip hop but the concept of the comeback is 90s hip hop fashion). If you like more youthful concepts, we have NCT Dream with Chewing Gum, We Go Up, My First and My Last, and many more; we also have NCT 127's Touch. If you like video games, NCT's recent comeback, Punch, is a video game themed comeback with video game sounds and a video game aesthetic. If you like the celestial concept, we have Moonwalk. If you just want a nice ballad, we have Coming Home. With NCT, the possibilities are endless.

Known for their more experimental sounding music, NCT has a very unique sound. For many of their songs, I could not imagine anyone else singing them. Their use of crazy beats and instrumentals always blows my mind when I listen to their songs. They are also known for their use of heavy bass. I used to listen to their music without earphones... what a mistake. I was missing out on all the intricate, complex beats and instrumentals in their songs. Personally for me, NCT songs are kind of experimental in the sense that it has crazy beats and often unique song structures but it is nothing that is too hard to handle. NCT's music is truly an acquired taste. The more you listen to their songs, the better it gets. The weirdness that you once associated with the song is now a unique experience that you cannot have anywhere else in Kpop.

Since all the sub-units have different music, I will talk about them separately.

NCT U
NCT U produces my favorite music from all of NCT.
My favorite NCT U songs are The 7th Sense, Yestoday, Baby Don't Stop, Coming Home, Timeless.... so almost all the NCT U's title tracks. NCT U does not have too many songs because they are usually singles so they do not have b-sides, but every song they come out with is a bop. They have yet to disappoint me with any releases. For some NCT songs, I'm not gonna lie, it took me a while to love. However, with NCT U, it is always an immediate hit for me.

NCT U's concept is that there is no concept. The members performing the song are chosen depending on how well they match with the song, so you never know who will be performing the song. This enables NCT U to release any song of any concept and of any genre. Since there is so much variety, it is really hard to pinpoint what kind of music they produce. The best I can say is that of the NCT U songs released, there seems to be 2 main types of NCT U songs. The first type is ballads by the main and lead vocalists of NCT 127. Examples of this include Timeless and Coming Home. The second type includes a lot of rap, especially from Taeyong and Mark. This can be seen in The 7th Sense, Yestoday, and Baby Don't Stop. I hope to hear even more amazing songs from NCT U. I really think NCT U is very unique because it gives NCT the ability to experiment with concepts that may not fit with one of their fixed sub-units. Concepts/ideas that I want to see done include an actual NCT U comeback with NCT Dream members, more Taeyong and Ten combo because they are 2 of my favorite dancers and also its one rapper and vocalist what more do can you want, Double Lee (Taeyong and Mark) rap (we have this in the b-sides but a title track with Double Lee would be soooo epic), an English song with the Foreign Swaggers, NCT Dream vocal line ballad, a song with NCT Dream's rap line, a NCT ballad line song with all the sub-units' main and lead vocalists INCLUDING WayV, a foreign line song aka all the foreigners, a NCT main dancer line performance video, an NCT main rapper line rap song, a party rock/club anthem song, etc. The possibilities are truly endless.

NCT Dream
I refer to NCT Dream's music as a teenage diary. All their title tracks reflect a teenage year/phase and explore different stages of adolescent development. Starting from their debut song, Chewing Gum, everything from the music to the choreography to the music video to the fashion screamed pre-teen to early teenage years (elementary to middle school vibes). In the music video, they were living in dorms, had little to no makeup, some of the members still had not gotten braces or had just started to get lingual braces yet. Here, they were very young and innocent looking. Then they came back with My First and Last where the members had a crush on their teacher in the music video. As they get a bit older, they are now experiencing love and crushes for the first time. I view their crush on their teacher as very innocent. With their next comeback, We Young, NCT Dream continues to show their youthfulness but this time a little bit more maturely. Then we are hit by surprise with Go. Go showcases the rebellious stage of a teen (high school). Here, everything changed. Their concept went from very bright to very dark color-wise. Their music became edgier transitioning from pop to hip hop. It reminded me a bit of NCT 127's songs, but the two sub-units still have their differences in music color. The harmonized shouting of the chorus sounds very energetic while rebellious at the same time. The rap also hit harddd. Their expressions turned from smiles to smirks. This is definitely a very underrated song and music video, so please check it out. Then they came back with the masterpiece that is We Go Up. This is my favorite NCT Dream song of all time. The song structure is pretty unique and you'll just have to listen to know. Also, Jaemin's upbeat poppy rap in the beginning is everything. The song is almost like an end of summer song. You know that feeling during the last few days of summer right before school starts, you feel forever young? This song gave me those vibes. The music video is sooo beautiful and really fits the end of summer vibes. Then we get Candle Light, a beautiful song that really lets NCT Dream's vocal line shine. This song is super bittersweet and I really wish everyone will watch the music video with subtitles so they can understand the lyrics. I interpreted this song and music video as a high school graduation and you and your friends are all working hard on one final project before graduating that you can look back on in the future and reminisce. The music video is super cute and very entertaining to watch. To top it all off, this song is especially special for NCT Dream fans because this is the last song with Mark in it and he wrote the lyrics to his rap part. Then we get Don't Need Your Love which really highlighted the groups' vocals (just wish Haechan was in this). It showcases love for realz this time (no more crush on your teacher type of puppy love). Then we get another amazing song, Boom. This is one of their most popular songs. I interpreted this song as a summary of their past concepts. They talk about how they have grown from young children into young men and will continue to bring us more amazing music. Also, in this song, Renjun's vocals were specially highlighted (yay recognition!). Then we have Ridin which is a more mature concept. As you can see, NCT Dream's songs pretty accurately exhibit the different stages of adolescent development in each comeback. I think this is extra special for people around the same age as them because they literally grew up with them and their music. NCT Dream showed fans of Kpop and the world that young age is not a limitation. It does not prevent one from performing amazing music and choreographies. NCT Dream is a very encouraging group because all their music is very relatable for adolescents. They are like a voice for adolescents and they always encourage adolescents to pursue their dreams and embrace their youth.

With NCT Dream, their songs tend to be more poppy, their raps are also more poppy, and their main and lead vocal line has very soft and smooth vocals. Listening to their song really makes you feel young again. It makes you energetic and bittersweet at the same time. Their music is known to be the most public-friendly out of all the sub-units. They tend to be catchy and more of what is popular and mainstream in Kpop.

NCT 127
As the Seoul based sub-unit, NCT 127 is just like any other Kpop group. It promotes in all parts of the world and has released Japanese albums and English versions of songs. They have a very distinct music color that I do not really know how to describe. They are known for their experimental sounding music, very rap heavy songs, edgier concepts (even though they have done an array of concepts, not just edgy), and have crazy beats and instrumentals. The members, especially Taeyong and Mark participate in writing lyrics for songs. As of now, nearly all of the raps by Taeyong and Mark are written by themselves. SM Entertainment is a Kpop company that is infamous for not giving its artists much creative freedom during their rookie years. However, Taeyong and Mark really changed this. This group also loves to do this harmonious shout/chant which I dig and I think is pretty unique to them.

From their debut, you could tell that this group was different. From the music to the outfit choices, there was no other group doing what they were doing (or at least not that I know of). Their debut song, Firetruck, is a Moombahton genre song with a lot of hip hop and trap. The song was loud, in your face, full of sirens, full of rap, crazy beats, a song about being lit and helping you cool your anger. To top it all off, their music video was very chaotic and their fashion was very unique at the time. When they first debuted, the public roasted them for their "ugly" outfits, but now it is considered trendy since this was like pre-Tiktok e-boys' style.

Then they came back with Limitless which is a super underrated song. This song could be interpreted as a love song but I interpret it differently. For me, this is the song that kickstarted it all. This song is singing about NCT's concept. From NCTmentary, a series of videos released during the 2018 Empathy era to explain NCT's concept of dreams, we can tell that dream is a crucial part of the NCT concept. Another crucial part of the NCT concept is "limitless" in the sense that the number of members and sub-units are limitless but also people as individuals... the possibilities for each person are limitless. I interpret the lyrics to be about NCT needing us and us "sympathizing through dreams" (mentioned in NCTmentary) together. I also interpreted the lyrics to be talking about NCT's desire to spread its music from the East to the West and their belief that though it will be hard to achieve, it is made possible due to their "limitless" concept. This song also has lyrics referencing "NCT The Origin" video, The 7th Sense, and more. I believe that this song is singing about NCT's concept and desires and is the start of their world domination goal.

NCT 127- Limitless

Then they came back with one of their most popular songs, Cherry Bomb. This song is super catchy and a lot of fun. They then came back with a completely with Touch. Touch is a poppy, fun, bright song which is a complete 180 from their more edgy concepts. After, they debuted in Japan with Chain returning to their edgier concept. Soon later, they returned with Regular and its repackage album title track Simon Says. Both songs demonstrate a more mature song and concept. Simon Says is another experimental song due to its crazy instrumentals. In 2019, the group came back with Superhuman which is phenomenal and highly under-rated. In 2020, NCT 127 switched things up once again with Kick It, a kung-fu themed song and a repackage album song, Punch, a video game theme song. Punch is an extremely experimental song with an uncommon, risky song structure. It is a truly one of a kind experience you can only experience here with NCT 127.

NCT 127 is full of surprises and you never know what concept and sound they will return with next. It is this surprise element that makes NCT 127 one of my favorite groups. NCT 127 really has a distinct sound and no one can replicate their sound and choreographies as well as they could.

WayV
By being under the same company and the same group, sometimes it is hard to differentiate oneself from other sub-units. Since the group is only a little over a year old as of July 2020, they do not have enough songs to clearly pinpoint their sound, but they have stayed fairly consistent with the space and celestial theme. They also have had a rock-infused instrumental dance break in every comeback aside from Regular which is pretty much WayV's thing now. They also often pair their edgier title tracks with a soft, fun, more laid back song. Members Hendery and Yangyang often participate in writing lyrics for their b-sides.

They debuted with the Mandarin version of Regular. They paired this title track with my personal favorite WayV song, Dream Launch. This is a super calming song that gives the members' vocals a moment to shine. This song is super uplifting and talks about launching their dreams into space and believing that dreams come true. Then they came back with Take Off, which a lot of people refer to as their official debut because this is the first title track that is unique to WayV. This is my favorite title track. It is catchy, the vocals are great, we get to hear a lot more of the rappers rap, and this is the first time we get to hear their rock-inspired dance break. They paired Take Off with Let Me Love You, a cute, catchy love song. Later on in the year, the returned with their celestial, moon themed song, Moonwalk. Once again, the vocals did not disappoint and the opening is so majestic and we got to see another rock-inspired dance break. Finally, with this album, we got actual b-sides that are not recycled from NCT 127. I love all the b-sides but if I had to pick, Yeah Yeah Yeah and Face to Face are my favorites. This is also the first time Hendery and Yangyang participated in writing raps. They paired Moonwalk with Love Talk, which is the song all NCTzens call the hoe anthem. The lyrics are very sexual but the song is so insanely catchy so you can't help but sing along. Let me remind you, all of this happened in 2019. WayV worked so hard their debut year... PLS DON'T SLEEP ON THEM! Then they returned with the first full album, Awaken the World with the title track Turn Back Time. Once again, we have a rock-inspired dance break... are we even surprised anymore... YES... AT HOW GOOD IT IS. Aye, this time we got 10 new songs! My favorites are Only Human (with raps written by Hendery and Yangyang), Bad Alive, Unbreakable, and Stand By Me (with raps written by Hendery).

WayV- Take Off

WayV- Turn Back Time

B sides
I am someone that does not usually listen to b sides. I have listened to a handful of albums' b sides. I just don't find them as good as the title track and I love pairing the song with the music video. With that being said, I have listened to every single NCT b side and I love them all. Their b sides do not sound like filler songs. They all sound well produced and are great songs. I will say, I feel like their albums lack a bit in being coherent, but the songs are great so I can't complain. Here are some of my favorites. The bold are my favorites of the favorites.

Dance
NCT is one of the best dance groups in the industry. All the sub-units have knife-like choreography and as a whole in NCT 2018, they were still super in sync despite having 18 members perform. Their choreographies are consistently difficult and interesting. Cherry Bomb is a very fun choreography with many funny parts. For example, they deal cards, play billiards, etc. I want to especially praise NCT 127 which is full of some of NCT's best dancers. They are super in-sync without losing their own personal dance color. Individually, many members are in my opinion some of the best in the industry. My two favorites are definitely Ten and Taeyong. Since debut, they have been praised by many professional dancers and fellow idols. They have amazing technique and a distinct personal style. Other amazing dancers that I personally like (this is personal opinion... I am not saying the others are bad) include Mark, Yuta, and Hendery.

Also, I LOVE NCT's dance breaks, with my favorite being the dance break in Take Off.

Music Videos
For most groups, I wouldn't really comment on their music videos because most Kpop groups have pretty good music videos, but I really want to emphasize how amazing NCT's music videos are. SM may not have the most expensive-looking music videos at first sight, but I think they cost more than meets the eyes and does not lose in comparison to some YG music videos which are known to look very high budget. SM really loves to rely heavily on post-production to really spice up NCT's music videos. I think WayV has some of the highest production music videos. Their specialty is their use of CGI and VFX. You can see this especially in Regular. Take Off is a masterpiece that uses clever transitions and special effects. NCT 127 also has amazing music videos. Regular is super cinematic, Kick It also has some special effects and is very well made, Superhuman is a masterpiece with its special effects and amazing editing, etc. NCT U's Boss and Baby Don't Stop are gorgeous because they were filmed in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine. NCT Dream's GO uses a glow in the dark, dark color effect (idk how to describe it), crazy editing, candid shots?, 90s inspired vibes. I do not see many other groups with music videos like this.

With almost all Kpop videos being amazing, SM really is upping their music video game through crazy editing, special effects, and unique concepts. I really appreciate SM trying out new things, being willing to take risks, and investing in their groups.
