My Two Cents: Hormones (2013)

WARNING: LOTS OF SPOILERS

Hormones (2013)

Year: 2013
Episodes: 13
Synopsis:
This drama revolves around ten main teens in the same high school. This drama covers topics about bullying, sexuality, dating, family, alcohol, popularity, etc.
Characters:
Toei: A girl from a single mother household who has trouble fitting in because she has more guy friends than girl friends. She is not as feminine as other girls and often does not understand their actions. Her girl "friends" are fake towards her and always slut-shaming her because she is friends with a lot of guys. She also has issues with boys. She is pretty but also so chill and comfortable to be around which makes her many guys' crush. When she rejects them, they stop being her friend. She does not understand this and questions why she is at fault. Her ex-boyfriend is gay but is now trying to get back together with her. As one can see, Toei has a lot on her plate. Toei is my favorite character in the series because I can relate to her the most. Like her, I am not very feminine and I have more guy friends. Aside from this, she is also my favorite character because she is a brave and independent person. She is honest about her feelings and opinions and never lies just to please others. Unlike many other teens, she tells her mom about the issues she faces. She is not submissive and fights back but very maturely.
Tar: He is a guitarist who is constantly mocked for being short. He falls for Toei and confesses to her, only to be rejected. He does not know how to handle the rejection and chooses to ignore her. I like Tar because he recognizes his mistakes and tries to fix them.
Win: With good looks, good grades, a wealthy family, and a charismatic, confident attitude, he is the star of his school. He is constantly going against the school and has a rebellious nature. He is a player that sleeps with a ton of girls. When he started to fall for a girl, he messed up and hurt her feelings. He never really thought much about his actions but learns that he needs to be responsible for them because they will hurt people.
Mhog: His hobbies include photography and reading. He neglects his girlfriend whenever he is reading or taking pictures. He is a bit more quiet and to himself.
Phu: He used to date Toei but they broke up after middle school. Since then, he started dating his bandmate, Thee. He is confused about his sexuality because he does not understand how he could like both boys and girls.
Dao: She has very protective parents and also operates a blog. She is a talented writer and her blog is popular due to her romantic love stories. She imagines love to be like her stories but she soon learns that reality is not all hearts and roses.
Sprite: She dates a college student but is constantly cheating on him with other guys, so she is called a slut at school. She is actually a great girl who loves her mom and is a good friend.
Khong Kwan: She is seen as the perfect girl. She is pretty, smart, and well-mannered. She later learns some secrets about her family and also cheats on a test for the first time. For the first time, she becomes a disappointment and we see her suffer through that.
Phai: He is a school gangster and is a leader among friends. He falls for Sprite but he is conflicted because she is his good friend's girlfriend.
Thee: He loves Phu but is hurt when he breaks up with him.

Comments:
This drama was much recommended by friends and I always see good reviews about it on blogs. I finally decided to give it a chance after seeing it on Netflix. I binge watched this show in a few days. This drama is really relatable; it tells us that we are not alone because many people suffer from the same issues. Seeing different types of issues makes us more aware and educated. We need more shows like this to make more people aware of the issues that many teens face.

I like how each episode focuses on a specific character but manages to weave a cohesive plot. By focusing on each character, we see more character development and we can focus on the issues they face. This increases how realistic the drama is. The overall plot is just a school but by zooming in on the students and highlighting their issues, it once again reminds you that everyone is suffering from something. I learned that we need to give the people around us more attention because any one of them could be struggling and is in need of love and help.

I also love the characters because though they make mistakes, they all reflect on their mistakes and try to fix them. Instead of criticizing kids about the mistakes they made, society needs to learn to be more understanding towards teens.
