Police Dramas

I love police dramas so please send me some recommendations!

Signal

Year: 2016
Episodes: 16
Though a criminal profiler and a lieutenant, Park Hae Young (Lee Je Hoon) does not trust the police department whatsoever due to a case in which his older brother was wrongfully accused and a kidnapping case involving one of his classmates. He finds an old walkie-talkie that should've stopped working years ago. He learns that through this walkie-talkie he can communicate with the late Detective Lee Jae Han (Jo Jin Woong) in his time. The two work together to solve cold cases and to attempt to prevent them from ever happening.
Comments:
This drama is a roller coaster ride. Signal is extremely suspenseful and the amazing acting only adds to it. I feel like the romance was a bit awkward but I don't mind it. One of the main reasons why I love this drama so much is because of the relationship and interactions between Hae Young and Jae Han. They are two detectives working for the same cause, trying their best to learn more information to pass on to each other to improve each other's time period. The chemistry they develop is beautiful. I love every character in this drama, even the villains. Some villains learn to reflect upon their past and try to help make things right. I think that is truly beautiful because it shows that everyone deserves a second chance in life.

Ghost

Year: 2012
Episodes: 20
Kim Woo Hyun (So Ji Sub) is the star of the Cyber Investigations Team. He graduated from the Police Academy with honors and is the son of a respected police officer. As he is solving a case, he meets Hades, a genius hacker who also happens to be his best friend from the police academy. Park Gi Young (Daniel Choi) dropped out of the police academy after learning of the corruption of the police department and became a hacker. Due to a fire that ruined both Gi Young and Woo Hyun's faces, Gi Young was mistaken for Woo Hyun. Forced to do facial recovery surgery, the hospital accidentally recovers Gi Young's burnt face to look like Woo Hyun. He decides to continue living as Woo Hyun to expose corruption in the police department.
Comments:
This is probably my favorite police Korean drama. I love how it ties computers and hacking into the police department because our society is now so grounded in using computers that they can be our best friends or our worst enemies. I hope viewers learn that sharing all of their information through computers is very dangerous, especially if it falls into the wrong hands. This drama was so suspenseful and our villain, played by the amazing Uhm Ki Joon, did a spectacular job in adding to the suspense. I think Lee Yun Hee is not the best actress but I'm not too mad about her stiff acting. Honestly, So Ji Sub was pretty stiff too but the other actors really saved the drama for me. Jyuk Joo is definitely my favorite character. He is rightoues and funny at the same time.

Mysteries of Love

Year: 2010
Episodes: 25
Chui Siu Lai (Tavia Yeung) aka Awesome Girl comes from a family of police officers and takes much pride in her job as a police officer. She is brave but headstrong, stubborn, and rash, causing her to be promoted to detective only now. To solve crimes, they often need the help of a local physics professor, Professor Kingsley King (Raymond Lam). The two become great partners at solving crimes but what if love enters into the equation.
Comments:
I watched this drama as a kid with my family on my tube tv and a DVD player. This drama definitely holds a special place in my heart as it was one of the earlier dramas I had watched. My favorite Hong Kong drama of all time, Moonlight Resonance, stars Raymond Lam and Tavia Yeung as two of the main actors and actresses, so I definitely watched this drama with a bias. After finishing Moonlight Resonance, I did not think anything could beat the Raymond Lam plus Linda Chung pairing, and nothing has, not even Raymond Lam and Tavia Yeung. That being said, this definitely came close. I am a sucker for any drama with science and crime solving. The side romance was cute but not necessary. I love the family conflict involved. Siu Lai's family conflict is realistic and interesting to watch. Kingsley's family conflict definitely added a lot to the drama but was super annoying. He has the stereotypical rich, mean mom who tries to tear the two apart and force another girl on Kingsley. There is a happy ending and the family conflict does improve, so don't worry about having to cry due to sadness or anger during the last episode.

Black and White

 Year: 24
Episodes: 2009
Pi Zi (Vic Zhou), known as the Case-Cracking King of the Northern District Police Station, transfers to the Southern District. He is paired with Ying Xiong (Mark Chao) or Hero, the Southern District Police Station's Case-Cracking King. One is a player and is all about chilling while the latter takes pride in his job and is all about justice. Initially, the two could not work with each other, but as they went through life and death together, they became an unbeatable duo. But what happens when the city is put in danger like never before? Will these two be able to take down corruption and violence with spies in the police department?
Comments:
Exciting, emotional, and conflicting, this drama is an amazing police drama. The difference in personality between the two leads provides comedy in the otherwise dark show. There are a ton of secrets, almost anyone can be a spy for the triad. It is beautiful to see two completely different people cooperating in order to help save the city from the evil. The acting is amazing. Both Mark and Vic did an amazing job. Though Mark won Best Actor at the Golden Bell Awards, I preferred Vic's acting. His role is so complex and layered. Even he doesn't know the real him. Also, our female lead, Ivy Chen, was amazing here. Spunky but righteous, I loved every scene she was in.

You're All Surrounded

Year: 2014
Episodes: 20
Eun Dae Gu (Lee Seung Gi), Uh Soo Sun (Go Ah Ra), Park Tae Il (Ahn Jae Hyun) and Ji Gook (Park Jung Min) are the new recruits in the violent crimes unit at Gangnam Police Station. To whip them into shape is their hot-headed superior, Seo Pan Suk (Cha Seung Woo). Together they fight crimes and there is also a murder mystery involved.
Comments:
This drama is half comedy and half suspense. The four rookies are nothing alike and most of them are not fit to be police officers. A hot-headed, rash girl; a womanizer; awkward Mr. Clumsy; and the over-serious dude who thinks he is an amazing cop; and to top it off, a crazy boss; this is an equation for a disaster, but they seem to make it work. The other half get serious. There is a past crime that we slowly learn more and more about. It involves some members of the team.

Every Move You Make

Year: 2010
Episodes: 20
I just love dramas that include a bit of science into the police department.
Yiu Hok Sum (Bowie Lam) is a detective who uses the human body and criminal psychology to solve crimes.
Comments:
This drama is truly fascinating because it reveals many things that we do unconsciously. It might also give you a tip or two on how to catch a liar.

D.I.E.

Year: 2008
Episodes: 25
D.I.E. (Death Investigation Extension) is a unit in the police force that deals with unsolved cases of other departments and also a place full of police rejects who are not wanted in any other department. Yu Tze Long (Roger Kwok) is a member of D.I.E. and he uses his special abilities to solve cases and speak for the dead.
Comments:
This drama is hilarious. I watched it with my dad and he was dying at every joke. This drama is funny because of its exaggerated acting so if you are not cool with that, don't watch.

Witness Insecurities

Year: 2012
Episodes: 20
Witness Protection Unit (WPU) inspector Hui Wai Kit or Sum (Bosco Wong) is assigned to protect Kui Chi Lam (Linda Chung), who witnessed a murder and an assault on her uncle. Chi Lam has an isolated and strange personality. She is afraid of talking to others and her only hobby is playing the cello. When Sum comes into her life, she starts to rely on his protection. But is this really love?
Comment:
Chi Lam's family is a big chaotic mess and full of snobby, hard to deal with people except for her uncle. I loved seeing Chi Lam break out of her shell and accept the help and love even her father couldn't give her. Sum's WPU team is also very lovable, especially Brother. Like most Hong Kong dramas, there are a definitely a couple other side romances to look out for. I definitely fell for Sum. He definitely is charismatic and a great leader that his team can rely on. No wonder why Chi Lam fell for him.

Lives of Omissions

Year: 2011
Episodes: 30
Laughing (Michael Tse) was undercover as a mute in mainland China. After the case, he resumes his identity as a police officer in Hong Kong. He later trains CIB recruits in undercover work. To get his jobs done quicker, he hires the gangster Michael So (Bosco Wong) as his informant. To stop the triads and to prevent the new CIB recruits from risking their lives, Laughing once again goes undercover.
Comments:
This drama was alright. It was a huge hit when it came out and the name "Laughing Gor" quickly became a household name. Personally, I was often confused about some of the details. If the drama was more clear, this would have been an amazing drama for me.
